Finding the Beat
There was a season that I attempted to play drums. Attempted being the keyword because at the end of the day, the chance of me finding the beat is about the odds of winning the lottery.
One of the biggest things I struggled with this past year is finding any resemblance of rhythm. Rhythm by definition is a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound. Instead of listening to a seasoned jazz drummer lay down an effortless beat, 2017 was more like watching a 2 year old play one of those toy drum kits. It happened but a lot of it was reactive, chaotic, and holding on for dear life.
While there's the creative part of me that loves going with the flow of life, the other part of me operates much better inside some predictive and planned order. In order to be more effective and a better steward of this life in 2018, I want to find a rhythm. A daily rhythm. A weekly rhythm. A seasonal rhythm.
For my sanity, my daily rhythm must include.....
- Time with Jesus
- Gym time
For my health, my weekly rhythm must include.....
- A date night with Jill
- A family day with the kids
- A sabbath to rest
Besides the things above that are non-negotiable, planning my days and weeks down to the minute so that I'm telling my time where to go instead of wondering where it went will be key. It's the small things that make up our lives and the better we get at creating a rhythm, repeated patterns, the better we're able to build the life we dream of!
If you want to change your life, change your rhythms!
